Crowdfunding update #5 July 2020

Alpkit, the outdoor gear brand (think north face), closed their campaign in one hour, raising £1.5M across ~1.5k investors. The raise never went public, and was done entirely in private mode.

Fintechs such as Curve, Currensea, Anna Money and Dozens are forced to freeze client money for a few days because their card issuer Wirecard (once a multi-billion euro german fintech) commited a large scale fraud that led to their bankruptcy. Service at the mentioned startups has since largely returned to normal; Curve, for example, now issues cards through a partnership with mastercard.

Future fund applications have reached over £320m across more than 300 startups, exceeding the £250m initially pegged for the scheme. The government has expressed an intention to expand the capital available through the scheme in pace with demand.

Seedinvest, a crowdcube partner, experiences record investment volume and signups. Crowdcube themselves also reported a 16% increase in the number of businesses funded in Q2 20020 vs Q2 2019.

The first shares to be sold on seedrs via capdesk are slated to appear by year end at the latest. Capdesk boasts companies such as Secret Escapes, Gousto and The TAB.

Tossed, the crowdfunded salad restaurant, shuts shop due to the impact of COVID on the business. The startup had been known for being one of the first london restaurants to go fully cashless, and also for acquiring Vital Ingredient, another london-based restaurant chain. Tart London, a similar (bakery/coffee shop concept) startup, has also closed its doors.
